Writer: ShaheenShaheen

Auroville is a unique, international township in South India, known for its international, spiritual ambiance, sustainable living, and close-knit intentional community. To make the most of your visit, it's important to understand Auroville’s ethos and prepare accordingly.

Here's everything you need to know before your first trip to Auroville, India.

Best Time to Visit and Weather Considerations

Auroville has a tropical climate with distinct seasons that can be enjoyed differently whenever you decide to come!

The best time, however, to visit is between December and March, when the weather is pleasant and ideal for exploring. If you're visiting during the monsoon season (mid-November to mid-December), be prepared for rainfall and occasional storms, but don't let that turn you away from Auroville as the beautiful red sand, the smell of petrichor and the occasional rainbows are a sight to enjoy.  Carrying a poncho or a lightweight rain jacket can be a lifesaver during sudden downpours. The humidity can be intense, so wearing breathable fabrics will keep you comfortable and ready to explore the city.

During the months of summer,  Auroville can be explored in a quiet setting, guesthouses are easily available and prices are sometimes marked down during the non-tourist season, beaches are filled with Aurovilians trying to cool down from the heat, so pack your sunblock, carry your swimwear and wind down during summer.

Footwear and Navigation

Auroville is best explored on foot or by bike, so comfortable footwear is essential. Birkenstocks, Tevas, or lightweight shoes are perfect for daily wear, and if you plan to walk through forested areas, sturdy walking shoes are recommended. Bonus tip: ensure you can easily remove those shoes as many places in Auroville require you to remove your footwear before entering.

During the rainy season, waterproof sandals or quick-dry shoes, with good grip are advisable. Since street lighting is minimal, carrying a flashlight or headlamp will help when navigating at night. This will help you stay away from the insects and animals that like to come out during a cold night. This is particularly important if you're staying in one of the more secluded guesthouses in the forest area or heading to events in the community after dark.

Clothing and Essentials

Mosquito repellent is a must, especially during the monsoon months. The ‘mosquito hours’ in Auroville are from 5am -  7pm and 5pm - 7pm, these are the hours that the mosquitoes are active.

Stay hydrated with a reusable water bottle, as you can refill it at designated water stations instead of buying bottled water. If you happen to find some trash or a bottle left behind, participate in the spirit of Auroville and bring it back to the nearest bin or your guest house.

Wear light, breathable clothing, such as cotton or linen pants to stay cool in the humid climate. Shy away from wearing white as it tends to easily turn into red due to the dust and sand in Auroville. A scarf, shawl or a cat  is useful for covering and protecting yourself whilst riding your bike or from the sun.

Auroville has many workshops and activities, so packing comfortable clothes that allow for movement will enhance your experience.Explore workshops in Auroville with Inside India, get in touch with us here.

A local SIM card (Airtel or Jio) is recommended for better connectivity. Internet access is available in cafes and guesthouses, but it may not always be reliable in remote areas. Telephone connectivity is limited to some areas so ensure you enable WiFi calling on your mobile phones.

Auroville is generally a safe place, but keeping a few things in mind ensures a hassle-free experience. Medical assistance is available at clinics like Santé and Auroville Health Centre until 5pm. For emergencies it is best to go to PIMS or JIPMER as soon as possible.

Be cautious of stray dogs, and avoid feeding. Use a flashlight to avoid snakes and scorpions during the rainy season. If you are bitten by a snake please visit JIPMER promptly with a picture of the snake. Occasional power cuts can occur, so keeping a power bank handy is useful.
